Most people understand that their shingles are installed on plywood. Although homes more than 30 years old may have other materials, today, plywood is the most common. In some cases, a roof replacement isn’t as easy as just removing the old shingles and installing new ones. Sometimes there is extensive damage that requires a new roof deck. Here are some reasons your roofing company may recommend it for your home.
Roof rot is a general term that refers to water damage under your shingles and underlayment to the roof deck and sometimes joists. When wood is wet for long periods of time, the wood begins to rot. You’ve likely seen this in nature on a fallen tree in the woods. The difference is that your roof needs the structural stability. If either or both your joists and roof deck are compromised, they need to be replaced.
We all know about termites and the damage they can do to your home. Carpenter bees are another pest that does significant damage to untreated wood throughout Tennessee. In most cases, they damage roof joists. However, when a joist or joists need replacing, it requires removal of the old roof deck. Squirrels, raccoons and other rodents can also damage more than just shingles which may lead to you needing a new roof deck.
This is the most obvious reason we replace roof decking. When a tree or tree limb comes through the home, the entire roofing system generally needs replacing from the insulation to the shingles. However, storm damage can lead to you needing a new roof deck without it actually being punctured. Sometimes the water damage weakens the plywood enough that a new roof deck is the best option.
