How Wind Damages Your Roof

Let’s assume you have a roof in good condition. The weather report calls for straight line winds or puts us under a tornado watch. Depending how the wind approaches your home, it can blow your shingles, yes even properly affixed ones, up. When this happens, the shingles are no longer properly affixed to your roof. The next time it rains and the wind comes from the same direction, the water can be forced up under your shingles. And, because water follows the path of least resistances, it may go down through your roof deck which leads to a roof leak.

Flashing is Also Often to Blame

The flashing is the metal that you see around your home’s dormers, chimney and other roof protrusions. Your flashing needs sealant to help it do its job. However, the sealant deteriorates over time. When that happens, water gets under your flashing and into your home. If you’re not having regular roof maintenance to your flashing especially, you’re eventually going to end up with a roof leak. The most frustrating part is that it’s hard to see from the ground whether the sealant on the flashing is intact.
