There was a time when choosing your new roof was simple. There were a few color options and only one style. Today you have many more options in color, style and material. If you’re planning on calling your local roofer in 2022 for a roof replacement, here are some things that will help you make the right decisions regarding your new roof.

Material

Although asphalt roofing is the most common roofing material throughout Tennessee, it’s not the only option. You may want to consider metal roofing as well. You’ll find that metal roofing costs more than asphalt roofing, however, it lasts significantly longer. It is also more durable and can reduce your cooling costs as much as 25%. Some homeowners insurance companies also offer discounts to homes with metal roofing.

Style

Asphalt roofing has two general categories; 3-tab and architectural shingles. Depending on the manufacturer, they may have several lines of architectural shingles that have different styles. These styles may look like shake, slate or a decorative style of shingles. When you choose your local roofer, make sure they are certified by the manufacturer whose products you want installed.

Again, depending on the manufacturer, metal roofing has different options. The most common one today is the standing seam metal roof. However, you can also find metal roofing that emulates roofing tiles or shingles. Be sure to ask the local roofer you call if they install metal roofing as not all do.

Color

Just like a dark shirt on a sunny day, a dark roof will absorb more heat leading to higher energy bills. If one of your goals with your new roof is lower cooling costs, consider a lighter color shingle or reflective metal roof. If you want the best option and asphalt is the material of choice, look at the cool roofing options available.
