There are ways to protect yourself so you don’t inadvertently hire someone who is less than ethical and professional or get completely scammed by a gypsy roofing company.

Avoid Solicitors

If you get a mailer to your home that has a picture of your roof or home that says anything like, “Our satellite/drone/records show your roof has damage and requires repair or replacing.” Throw it away. No Nashville roofers have satellites. It’s illegal in Tennessee for anyone to fly a drone above your home without permission. And what records are they talking about? The same goes for someone who knocks on your door saying they see damage. These are all signs of shady roofing contractors.

Check Out All Companies Before You Invite Them to Your Home

This goes for Knoxville roofing companies, local siding companies and painters too. You should thoroughly check out any contractor before you call them to perform an inspection or provide you a quote. Even a free one! Things to look for include:

• A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau
• Many high customer ratings/reviews on public sites like Angi, Google and Facebook
• Licensing with the state
• Local office

Interview Them

Once you’ve decided that they’re worth having out for an estimate, look at the person who arrives and what they arrive in. Shady roofing contractors don’t have vehicles with their name, website and phone number boldly advertised on their vehicles. Their staff doesn’t usually dress professionally. Then look at any marketing information they provide, it may only be a business card, but what do you deduce from it? Make sure you feel comfortable with the person at your home. Ask them questions, do they look you in the eye when answering? Honest people don’t have trouble with the truth.
